Breed Selector Quiz
This dog breed quiz answers “what dog should I get?” in 8 quick questions — some call it the “what dog am I” quiz. We score all 42 breeds in our dataset against your answers and show your top 3 matches.

Where will your dog live most of the time?
How it works
Answer 8 quick questions about your home, kids, activity level, experience, shedding tolerance, grooming effort, barking tolerance, and size preference. The quiz scores all 42 breeds in our dataset against your answers: each breed's 1–5 trait scores are compared to your choices, mismatches are penalized with weights reflecting how much each answer matters, and size is matched against breed weight.
Your top 3 matches are shown with a match percentage, each linking to a full breed profile or head-to-head comparison so you can keep researching. If you're wondering which dog breed you should get, this is the fastest honest starting point — but the quiz narrows the field, it doesn't replace meeting the dog.
Frequently asked questions
How is the match percentage calculated?
Each answer is compared to the breed's trait scores in our 42-breed dataset. Differences are weighted by importance and converted to a 0–100 fit score. A higher score means fewer compromises, not a guaranteed perfect dog.
What data does the quiz use?
The same dataset behind every page here: 42 breeds with weight, lifespan, coat, monthly cost estimates, and 1–5 editorial trait scores for exercise need, shedding, trainability, kid-friendliness, apartment suitability, barking, and grooming need.
Should I only consider my top match?
No. The quiz narrows the field, but individual temperament varies — meet the dog, talk to the breeder or shelter, and be honest about your routine before deciding.
Is this the “what dog breed am I” quiz?
That's one name for it — a dog breed quiz that matches your lifestyle to our 42-breed dataset. Answer honestly (especially about exercise and barking tolerance) and your top 3 will make sense.
What’s the calmest dog breed?
By our dataset’s exercise-need scores, the calmest breeds (1/5) are the Bulldog, Pug, Shih Tzu, Chihuahua, and Maltese. But ‘calm’ also means trainable and quiet — answer the quiz’s questions about your activity level and noise tolerance honestly, and it will weight all of that into your top 3.
